A global FMCG manufacturer needed to identify printable RFID suppliers capable of supporting liquid-filled packaging, such as bottles and cans, rather than general-purpose RFID products.

The company had no reliable way to separate suppliers who genuinely engineered their tags for liquid interference from those who simply marketed printable RFID as a feature. This distinction mattered because liquids absorb and weaken RFID signals, while tag performance on liquid and metal surfaces remains a technical limitation.

They reached GreyB to identify suppliers whose technical capabilities, printer compatibility, patents, and deployment evidence matched its packaging requirements.

Four Decision Layers Converted a Supplier List Into a Ranked Shortlist

Finding suppliers who claim to make printable RFID is easy. A quick market scan can identify dozens. Finding suppliers who can deliver on liquid-filled packaging requires a more focused assessment.

The analysis used four sequential decision layers. Each layer narrowed the field and added proof that supplier claims alone could not provide.

1. Defining What Qualified as Printable RFID for Packaging

The project boundary was established before evaluating suppliers.

Only solutions developed for packaging applications, with bottles as the primary use case, qualified for assessment. Standard RFID cards, access-control tags, and non-packaging formats were excluded.

Without this filter, generic RFID vendors unrelated to beverage packaging would have buried the smaller group of relevant suppliers.

2. Identifying the Suppliers Worth Evaluating

Market research and patent backtracking identified 15 suppliers.

This approach included established market participants and companies with limited market visibility but relevant filed intellectual property.

3. Evaluating Packaging Fit Against Weighted Requirements

Each of the 15 suppliers was scored against four criteria. The criteria were weighted according to the factors that determine whether printable RFID can work on an existing beverage packaging line.

4. Verifying Real-World Deployment

The assessment moved beyond laboratory results, product literature, and supplier datasheets.

Live deployment evidence was examined to determine which suppliers had already demonstrated their technology under production conditions. One supplier was found to be operating at production scale.

Two Parallel Search Tracks Built a Complete Supplier Universe

The supplier list was not built through a single search method. Two search tracks ran in parallel.

The first track reviewed market research, company disclosures, and industry reporting to identify suppliers actively marketing printable RFID for packaging.

The second track used a dedicated patent search string focused on printable RFID and packaging applications. Every relevant result was backtracked to its assignee and inventors.

This step was designed to identify suppliers that held relevant filed IP but did not appear prominently in a standard company search. In some cases, their engineering activity was stronger than their marketing presence.

Combining the two tracks created a final list of 15 suppliers. The starting universe was not dependent on which companies marketed themselves most visibly. It included suppliers visible through commercial activity and those found primarily through patent filings.

A Weighted Scoring Model Turned 15 Vendor Claims Into One Ranked List

A simple yes-or-no checklist would not have provided enough differentiation.

The assessment used a weighted scoring model so that every supplier was evaluated against the requirements that determine success on a beverage packaging line, rather than the features listed in a brochure.

The four evaluation parameters were:

  1. Support for printable RFID, weighted 2x
    Whether the supplier offered RFID tags that could be printed and used in packaging applications.
  2. Liquid-item compatibility, weighted 2x
    Whether the tag could retain readability when applied to packaging containing water, sugar, citric acid, or other liquids that can absorb and weaken RFID signals.
  3. Compatibility with standard RFID printers, weighted 2x
    Whether the solution could work with existing printer infrastructure without requiring specialized equipment.
  4. Relevant patent evidence, weighted 1x
    Whether the supplier’s claimed technical capabilities were supported by filed intellectual property.

Liquid compatibility and printer compatibility were double-weighted because both factors could determine whether a technology was practical to deploy.

A tag that cannot be read through water, sugar, and citric acid is of limited value, regardless of its other features. A tag that requires a non-standard printer introduces additional cost and implementation friction that most packaging lines may not accept.

This model converted 15 separate, difficult-to-compare supplier claims into one ranked list based on the company’s packaging requirements. As shown in the scoring table on page 3 of the raw case study, four suppliers met all four requirements and achieved the highest analysis score.

How the Top-Ranked Tag Addressed Liquid and Metal Interference

For the top-ranked supplier, the team examined exactly how the RFID tag addressed liquid and metal interference rather than accepting the supplier’s compatibility claim at face value.

Patent disclosures were broken down into a step-by-step technical mechanism. This created an evidence-based understanding of why the supplier’s tag performed where others fell short, rather than treating every “liquid-compatible” claim as equally credible.

One of the four top-ranked suppliers held a patent describing a metal container with an integrated UHF RFID tag.

The patented design used a parabolic concave bottom surface positioned at some distance from the antenna. This surface reflected radiation and extended the tag’s read range.

Market Visibility Did Not Predict Packaging Fit

The engagement began with an assumption common in supplier scouting: that a supplier’s stated features provide a reliable basis for comparison.

The research challenged this assumption.

Several suppliers with an established presence in the RFID market, including at least one long-established brand, scored below companies with less brand recognition after liquid compatibility and printer compatibility were assessed against the client’s requirements.

Market visibility and packaging fit proved to be separate variables. One did not predict the other.

Four of the 15 Suppliers Met Every Technical Requirement

Of the 15 suppliers screened, four met all four requirements:

  • Support for printable RFID
  • Liquid-item compatibility
  • Compatibility with standard RFID printers
  • A relevant patent

The weighted model allowed the client to separate suppliers with broad RFID capabilities from those whose technologies were more closely aligned with liquid-filled packaging.

One Supplier Had Verified Deployment Across 1.5 Million Liquid-Filled Products a Year

Patent evidence alone did not determine the final result. The team also looked for evidence that the technology had moved beyond a laboratory or datasheet.

The same supplier whose patent described the integrated UHF RFID structure had a separately documented commercial deployment.

Its technology was being used to tag more than 1.5 million liquid-filled products each year for a luxury goods brand. The production system used a custom scanning tunnel capable of reading 40 to 50 bottles at once.

This evidence confirmed that the supplier’s claims were supported by both technical IP and production-scale deployment.

How Can FMCG Companies Identify the Right Printable RFID Supplier?

FMCG teams need to assess RFID suppliers beyond marketing claims. They need to determine whether a tag has been engineered for liquid-filled packaging, whether it fits existing printer infrastructure, and whether the supplier’s expertise is supported by relevant IP or field deployment.

A focused supplier scouting process can distinguish suppliers that are ready for engagement from those that require further validation or are better suited as backup options.

A broader technology scouting approach can also identify companies with relevant field IP that may not appear in a standard market scan.
