Value Delivered
The findings gave the client a strong evidence base to assess and reduce infringement risk in the mobile phone design patent. By tracing relevant product design history and identifying prior disclosures, the client gained prior art that showed key claim elements already existed. This helped strengthen its invalidity position, support legal and business decisions, and avoid spending time on broad, low-value searches.
Problem Solved
The client needed prior art for a mobile phone design. The design included an intermediate plate above the PCB. It also had a cut portion for the upper cover and a thermal pad laminated over the structure. Patent searches showed these features only in fragments. Common elements, such as the upper cover and thermal pad, were easy to find. However, the main challenge was to find an intermediate plate with a cut-out.

Solutions Offered
To overcome the limitations of traditional prior art searches, we explored alternative technical evidence sources containing detailed product design information.
Our investigation uncovered historical product disclosures that revealed the complete combination of claim elements, including structural and thermal management features relevant to the asserted patent. The final prior art package provided strong evidence that the claimed architecture existed in commercial products before the patent filing date.
