The research team changed the search direction by analyzing the underlying design features instead of limiting the search to wrist-based fitness products.

The breakthrough came when the team explored related products with similar structural characteristics and identified scuba weight belts as a potential match. This opened a new search path into adjacent markets and communities.

The team investigated:

  • Diving products and scuba equipment.
  • Online marketplaces.
  • YouTube videos and scuba forums.
  • Product communities sharing similar designs.

This investigation uncovered a Ukrainian website offering weight bands that matched the required design characteristics. The team then used web archives to confirm that the product was publicly available before the critical date.

The identified product disclosed the required design elements, including a strap structure and multiple weights arranged along the flexible band, providing the anticipatory prior art needed for patent invalidation.
