Following Product and Contributor Leads to Novelty-Destroying IEEE Prior Art

wifi 7

Value Delivered

The research identified IEEE P802.11-21/0224r1, a novelty-destroying document disclosing separate transmission and reception capability indicators for high-order QAM across specified resource-unit configurations.

The client could use this reference to challenge the novelty of the claimed Wi-Fi 7 capability-signaling mechanism. The case also demonstrated how product intelligence, contributor tracking, and standards-development records can uncover decisive prior art when conventional keyword searches fail.

Problem Solved

The target claim related to how a Wi-Fi 7 device signals its support for 4096-QAM. Because a device may support 4096-QAM reception but not transmission—or vice versa—the claim required separate identifiers for reception and transmission capabilities. These indicators applied to both individual and composite resource units of a specified size.

Direct searches using terms such as “4096-QAM,” “Rx 4K-QAM,” and “Tx 4K-QAM” did not identify the required disclosure. The terminology was relatively new, and the concept had only started appearing in IEEE 802.11be discussions around early 2019. Moreover, the relevant documents described the feature through the broader EHT PHY Capability framework rather than using the claim’s exact language.

Solution Offered

The search began by examining commercial Wi-Fi 7 products and identified Qualcomm’s FastConnect platform, which advertised 4K-QAM capabilities. As an early Wi-Fi 7 technology provider, Qualcomm was likely to have participated actively in developing the corresponding IEEE standards.

The research therefore shifted toward Qualcomm’s IEEE 802.11be contributions and related change requests. This led to IEEE 802.11-21/0153r0, which discussed EHT PHY capabilities and contained comments from a Qualcomm contributor. By tracking that contributor, associated change requests, and connected IEEE records, the search uncovered IEEE P802.11-21/0224r1.

The identified document expressly disclosed separate fields indicating support for transmitting and receiving 1024-QAM and 4096-QAM over specified single and multi-resource-unit configurations. This closely matched the claimed capability-signaling arrangement and gave the client a strong novelty challenge.
