L’Oréal has figured out a method that keeps probiotics dormant on the shelf and spring to life on skin

This innovation solves the long-standing issue of shelf-stability in live bacteria skincare, where products often spoil or lose potency before reaching store shelves (patent- WO2025032101.)

The key part is crystallizing live Lactobacillus bacteria with cryoprotectants, which are protective compounds like salts, proteins, or polysaccharides. This keeps the bacteria stable during storage and active once applied to skin.

Once on skin, the live Lactobacillus produces compounds that restore microbiome balance and reverse visible signs of aging.

In its patent filing, L’Oréal reported a 5% reduction in wrinkles and pigmentation, over 10% boost in hydration and radiance, and noticeable improvements in dermal density and elasticity. After 56 days, these improvements went even further.
