Our investigation enabled the client to identify highly relevant Tier-1 prior art that conventional prior-art searches had overlooked. By reinterpreting a critical claim limitation related to timing, we expanded the search landscape beyond traditional roulette bonus implementations and uncovered a reference that aligned with the claimed invention’s sequence of events. This provided the client with stronger evidence for patentability assessment and potential validity challenges while demonstrating how claim interpretation can directly influence prior-art discovery
Problem Solved
The primary challenge was that initial searches repeatedly identified roulette bonus game references that appeared technically similar but failed to satisfy the invention’s most critical limitation, the processor selecting the bonus number before the roulette outcome was known. Existing searches remained constrained by the assumption that the processor’s selection had to occur during gameplay, causing potentially relevant references with pre-generated or advance selections to be overlooked.
From the research perspective, this created a difficult search problem because traditional keyword-based and feature-centric searches continued returning the same categories of references without addressing the timing requirement. The breakthrough required questioning the default interpretation of the claim language, particularly the phrase “before the ball falls on any number,” and redefining the search around when the processor could legally make the selection rather than how the bonus was awarded.

Solution Offered
The solution involved reframing the search strategy by broadening the interpretation of the claim’s timing limitation and expanding the search scope to include references where processor selections or random outcomes were generated before gameplay began. Instead of focusing solely on roulette bonus mechanics, the search targeted event sequencing, advance randomization, and pre-generated processor selections across gaming systems.
This shift uncovered a Tier-1 reference disclosing processor-based random selection before the roulette outcome, with supporting flowcharts clearly demonstrating the required sequence of events. By aligning the disclosed timing with the agreed claim interpretation, the search successfully identified a novelty-destroying prior art reference that previous approaches had failed to locate, illustrating the value of combining claim interpretation with adaptive search methodology.
