GreyB helped the client strengthen its invalidity position against a patent covering handheld field-service management and remote technician support. By looking beyond standard patent databases, we found earlier industry evidence that showed similar ideas existed before the patent. This gave the client stronger prior art support for its case.
Problem Solved
Conventional patent and keyword searches revealed individual features such as handheld devices, task management, and field data collection. However, they failed to uncover evidence showing the complete field-service ecosystem, particularly real-time interaction between field technicians and remote support personnel. The challenge stemmed from the fact that the innovation was rooted in HVAC service operations rather than purely in software or hardware development.

Solutions Offered
The research traced how field-service technology evolved in the HVAC and construction industries. Instead of relying only on patents, the search followed industry breadcrumbs from AHR Expo records. This led to FieldCentrix, an early provider of mobile field-service software.
Through archived websites, industry publications, and historical product documentation, we uncovered prior art describing handheld technician devices, remote assistance capabilities, enterprise synchronization, and field-service management workflows that closely aligned with the asserted claims. The resulting evidence provided a comprehensive prior-art foundation and a strong basis for challenging the patent’s validity.
