Supercritical is solving the critical problem of high-cost and inefficient green hydrogen production. Traditional electrolysers are expensive, energy-intensive, and often require additional compression equipment to pressurize hydrogen for transport or storage. Supercritical addresses this by developing the world’s first high-pressure and ultra-efficient electrolyser.

R&D Focus

Supercritical is pioneering high-pressure electrolyser technology for green hydrogen production. Their R&D focuses on developing ultra-efficient, zero-emission electrolysers that eliminate the need for energy-intensive compressors by generating hydrogen at high pressures directly from water. They operate in the pressurised green hydrogen segment, targeting hard-to-abate sectors such as ammonia production, refineries, methanol, industrial heat, and heavy transport—where high-pressure hydrogen is essential but traditionally costly and inefficient to deliver.

Innovative Solution

Supercritical is developing the world’s first high-pressure, ultra-efficient electrolyser that uses supercritical water—a state where water is neither a gas nor a liquid—to produce green hydrogen directly at high pressure. This innovative process eliminates the need for separate compression, significantly reducing energy use and cost, while enabling scalable, low-cost, on-site green hydrogen production for industrial use.

Solution Effectiveness

Supercritical’s technology delivers a 21% lower Levelised Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH200) compared to PEM technology for hydrogen delivered above 200 bar, with 20–30% energy efficiency gains over traditional electrolysers. It also operates with just 50% of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with PEM systems and requires 17% less renewable electricity by utilizing waste heat. Additionally, it eliminates the use of PFAS chemicals and iridium in its electrolyser module and uses 10 times less energy to deliver hydrogen at 350 bar pressure, making it a highly sustainable and cost-effective solution for industrial green hydrogen production.
