Nissan Making EVs for natural disasters

March 13, 2023

Nissan Motors is going to lend its EVs to a Japanese town in case of a natural disaster.

More specifically, their LEAF EVs will be powering the evacuation centers in Kotohira.

I believe this is a good example of “scenario-driven car making.” As I shared in my last email, it’s basically the idea that our electric vehicles should be crafted to do more than just take us from point A to point B.

Since Nissan describes its LEAF EVs as “driving storage batteries,” or, in other words, battery-on-wheels, it’s clear that its aim with its EVs is more than just commuting.

Another factor driving this idea is that Relectrify, an Australian startup, is reusing old Nissan LEAF EV battery packs for energy storage.

There are numerous innovative ideas for EV manufacturing, such as the one above. After extensive research, we’ve boiled down the 7 innovative EV technologies that many companies, like Tesla and Renault, are pursuing

For example, phase change material (PCM) based cooling is one of the 3 top trends in battery cooling.

PCM absorbs a large amount of heat energy and undergoes a phase change from solid to liquid. It then releases the energy as it turns back into a solid.
