Upgrade Fuel Cells: Power + Coolant in One Innovation
What if you could upgrade a hydrogen fuel cell to not only produce power but also generate a high-performance coolant for hybrid vehicles at the same time?
Given Valeo’s leadership in next-generation powertrain solutions, we wanted to introduce a novel technology invented by the University of Kuwait that uses pre-prepared effervescent tablets to significantly complement and enhance its fuel cell performance.
What does it do? The innovation we want to highlight addresses the common issues of hydrogen storage and usage by eliminating the need for complex equipment and offering a more practical and cost-effective solution. The effervescent tablets are composed of Hydrogen-active metallic particles (such as Magnesium, Aluminium, Zinc, Nickel, Lead, etc) and effervescent agents (like Citric acid or Sodium Bicarbonate). The tablets are fabricated in a helium-filled glove box, to prevent premature reactions with air or moisture.
How does it work? When water is introduced at the bottom of the container, it initiates a chemical reaction with the bottom tablet. This reaction simultaneously produces hydrogen gas and an aqueous suspension of the metallic particles (e.g., Al(OH)₃ or Mg(OH)₂). This suspension can be used as a heat transfer fluid due to its high thermal conductivity.
As each tablet fully reacts and dissolves, the next tablet in the vertical stack drops down to continue the reaction, ensuring a steady production of hydrogen and aqueous suspension.
We believe this innovation could be a good valuable addition to Valeo’s Power business. We would be thrilled to discuss more such integration opportunities that would resound well with the company’s mission of optimising its powertrain business.
