Why I like working at GreyB, ft. Megha
The story begins on the day I heard of GreyB.
2 years and 2 months ago, I was a wide-eyed ambitious Ph.D. awaiting confirmation from a professor from the University of Texas. But, I was unsure of pursuing this path. Deep down, I knew I needed to do something substantial, but laboratory work with my little daughter in tow was not one of them.
Cue a call from a lab mate- a Ph.D. dropout and a recent hire at GreyB.
I asked him – “ye GreyB kya company hai (what is Greyb)?”
His answer was vague, “Patent vatent related company hai. Patents padhna hota hai. Bahut jyada padhai karni hoti hai (It’s a patent company where the job entails reading patents and a lot of studying)”.
I’ll be honest. Hearing what he had to say about GreyB, I was least interested in the company. But curiosity killed the cat (or rather gave it a life lol).
Before the day’s end, I opened the GreyB website to learn more about it. And what do you know, contrary to what my friend had to say about the company, I found it quite intriguing.
I submitted my resume immediately, shubh kaam main deri kyun? (Why wait to do the right deed).
The very next day, I received a call for an interview, my first green flag.
My second green flag was when my interviewers- Rajesh and Nidhi, gave me an assignment that constituted a lot of open-ended questions. The chance to learn and come to a conclusion all by myself gave me perspective and freedom. At that point, my decision was made, if I were offered a job here, I would accept it.
What were my Initial Six Months like?
The initial two months started with doing different tasks related to projects such as searching data, doing relevancy checks, and bucketing 100s of patents.
Not going to lie, but by the end of those 2 months, I was not very happy. I started second-guessing myself. But I knew in the corner of my heart what kept me from quitting was the thrill of working in different domains. Every project was different. Every project had new learning. And with every new project, I was correcting my old mistakes, and I was making new mistakes to learn from.
After six months
After sticking through for the initial 6 months, I realized I was consulting for the biggest names in the world in every domain possible. In addition to the fact that by the end of six months, I was not just doing the allotted tasks. Slowly, I was starting to own my projects – I was bringing my perspective to the project from what to search to solving problems and writing executive summaries.
By then, I had found out what I liked, and I enjoyed the complete project process. I liked reading about various domains. I liked the consultation and recommendation process. I liked the culture and how willing and open people were to new ideas. Moreover, I liked the challenges that I get every now and then. Every quarter, I have new responsibilities.
The thrill of working had now leveled up, and I couldn’t even imagine not doing it anymore. All I had to do was- understand the technology and the client’s objective and connect the dots.
Now for a crucial question, I frequently get and how I answer it.
Is it easy to juggle work with taking care of a child – NO.
Is the struggle all worth it? – Absolutely, because I love what I do!
